Corporate Flight Departments
Our 5 Simple Steps on our Journey together.
We follow the “5 Simple Steps to a Safer Flight Department” methodology on our Journey. An outline of what you can expect during our Partnership is laid out below. Implementation times for each vary depending on the maturity of your organization and will be determined during a GAP Analysis.
Step 1
Understand and embrace a culture of safety. Train and widely communicate your intentions.
Safety is all about culture, and safety is everyone's business. You cannot fake a safety culture. We’ll take a deep dive into what it means, and what it means to you as an organization.
Understand that safety MANAGEMENT systems are very powerful business management tools in a manager's toolbox.
Educate yourself and your staff on what you believe your culture should be like, and make should it will permeate every aspect of the business.
Lead by example, and expect the same from your staff. Safety cultures work from the top down, and from the bottom to the very top.
Step 2
Briefings and an Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP)
We’ll implement structured pre-departure, approach and post flight crew briefings that incorporate a forward-thinking risk management and mitigation principle, shown through major studies to reduce risk.
Sign up for an ASAP program to protect yourself while openly sharing safety incidents. The support and guidance of these programs are invaluable.
Provide continuous feedback to reporters on what you did to address their concerns. Make sure you employ effective communication, and close the communication loop by involving staff and telling them what you did to address their concerns.
Step 3
Risk analysis, assessment and mitigation.
Institute some form of pre-flight risk assessment. The more dynamic the better, but a simple FRAT is a great first step. Your briefings from step 1 is already a great risk analysis, assessment and mitigation tool, and we’ll build on these to create easy to use, documented procedures!
Create and understanding, or even procedures to mitigate identified or known risks should they pop up and empower you and your crew to incorporate these in their every day flying.
Step 4
Create realistic policies and procedures, tailored to your operation.
This is the hart and soul of it all. Together we will create a bespoke, personalized manuals that outlines your organization, policies on operating the aircraft, and general rules for your flight department.
Continue fostering your safety culture by further developing and formalizing an SMS that is easy to use and allows for internal reporting of safety issues and occurrences.
Develop an easy-to-use Emergency Response Plan that sets procedures, and policies, for your company to help guide you during stressful times should an accident, or incident, occur with your aircraft.
Step 5
Continuous monitoring and improvement.
Create an internal review of your safety system annually, whether it be an SFD informal meeting with everyone brainstorming on how to improve, or a dedicated workgroup consisting of employees from different departments with an interest in safety. Safety is everyone's business.
Once you have these tools in place, consider having an outside vendor audit your safety network and provide you with resources to improve what you worked so hard to implement. External audits are a wonderful resource to self-improve and maintain abreast industry best practices. This should be done whether you plan to obtain any certifications or not.
Consider adding some form of Flight Data Monitoring to your department.
